Another law to honor the contribution of our Silver Ancestors in the construction of the Panama Canal just passed second Debate in (Pleno) of the National Assembly of Panama four days ago. Spearheaded by our friend and staunchest supporter of our Law #7 to Declare Cultural and Historic Patrimony the Silver Cemeteries of Mount Hope, Gatun and Corozal, Iracema de Dale, Diputada from Colon, Bill 562 is sure to be declared Law of the Land very soon.

Taken from the Asamblea’s web page, we’ve provided the text of Bill 562 in Spanish which basically seeks to:

1. Declare every August 1st as the Day Recognizing the Fallen Afro Antillanos (West Indians) who died in the Construction of the Panama Canal and also in recognition of their contribution to the identity and social progress of the Panamanian people.

2. During this day, it is proposed that the ACP (Panama Canal Authority), in conjunction with all public educational facilities, shall enact commemorative activities highlighting the contribution of the Afro Antillanos (West Indians) who gave their lives during the construction efforts.

3. The ACP shall order the dedication of a monument commemorative of all the fallen West Indian construction workers who participated in the building of the Panama Canal. The Monument, it stipulates, should be erected on the Banks of the Panama Canal.

4. This Law shall be immediately viable the day after its promulgation.
